A week after a potential lake record spotted bass was caught-and-released without an official weigh-in, a new New Melones record spotted bass has been officially weighed in.
Mike Sanders of Hughson caught an eight-pound, three-ounce spot on Feb. 7 while fishing a main lake point with a Huddleston R.O.F. 12, a rainbow-patterned swimbait. Sanders weighed in the record at Glory Hole Sports and safely returned the fish to the lake.
Sanders’ catch comes one week after Mel Caldwell caught a spotted bass he weighed at 8.8 pounds, but released without official verification.
Both bass surpassed the previous standard of 8.1 pounds set by Joe Bruce.
The state record for spotted bass was set in 2001 at Pine Flat Lake at 10-pounds, four-ounces.
