It was brutally cold on Lake Tahoe the morning of Dec. 29 but fishing guide Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters was out with his son, Eric, toplining for trout when a rod went off while trolling near Elk Point.

Gene St. Denis fought the fish and battled both the determination of the brown and the frigid, sub-freezing temperatures before leading the monster brown to Eric’s waiting net.

The brown weighed 15-pounds, 9-ounces and was 33 inches long. It was in 15 feet of water when it hit the modified tui chub plug.

Twenty days earlier, it was Eric who hooked the big fish. On Dec. 9, he landed a 28.9 pound mackinaw.
