A potential lake record spotted bass was caught and released at New Melones Reservoir.

Mel Caldwell was trolling with a blue/silver Trophy Stick  when he hooked and landed the bass he weighed in at 8.8 pounds. Caldwell did not weigh the fish on a certified scale before letting it go so the current lake record of 8.1 pounds stands. That was set by Joe Bruce.

Caldwell also caught an released a 6.9 pound spot later that day.

The state record for spotted bass was set in 2001 at Pine Flat Lake at 10-pounds, four-ounces.
