A New Melones lake record spotted bass caught Saturday during a tournament fell three ounces short of tying the world record.

Randy Pierson of Oakdale caught a 10.1 pound spotted bass while fishing a tournament. He declined to provide what he was using or where the bass was caught.

The bass was a meal or two away from surpassing the 10.4 pound world record established in May of 2001 at Pine Flat Lake.
