Full moons, minus tides, warm weather and then a shot of cold has fish confounded. A lot of tough fishing being reported but there are some bright spots. Here are this week’s Best Bites:

LAKE AMADOR trout: Special bonus plants of trout larger than 10 pounds have been going in weekly for a month and will continue. A 16 pounder was caught last week.  Kastmasters, Power Bait, Power Eggs and Mice Tails work. Trout are in the coves and along the outer edges of points and shorelines.  Guide Randy Williams reported plenty of action using rainbow Power Bait in the backs of coves in 10 feet of water. LEWISTON LAKE trout: Trout are so thick from Frog Rock to the Dam one can walk on them. Most prefer to hook them, instead.  Bank anglers are casting nightcrawlers with marshmallows and getting limits. Pine Cove Marina (530) 778-3770

SAN PABLO DAM trout:  The opening of San Pablo Dam to fishing is Friday at 6:30 a.m. The much-anticipated opener should be productive. Water quality is good with two feet of visibility. Water temperature is 51 degrees and the lake has been well-stocked. (510) 223-1661

SAN PABLO BAY sturgeon:  Sturgeon fishing is very good and large sturgeon are in the mix. Use mud shrimp or ghost shrimp in shallow water between China Camp and the Pumphouse. A few bass will surprise.  If you’re in the vicinity, poke into the Petaluma River for a shot at striped bass. (415) 456-0321
