Trout anglers have two excellent choices this weekend. Pardee Lake opens Friday and has planted three tons of trout to be ready. On the Upper Sacramento River, the caddis hatch began Monday and mid-day angling has been excellent near Redding. There are other quality options available. The Coho bite at Lake Oroville is excellent and fish can be hooked from the surface down to 45 feet. Eel River remains in very good condition and there are fish throughout the lower river. As a bonus, stripers have shown up in the South Bay and San Pablo Bay. Here are this week’s Best Bites:

LAKE PARDEE trout: Lake opens to fishing Friday after its winter closure. Aside from what should be an abundant holdover population, trout plants of 3,000 pounds went in both Wednesday and Thursday. (209) 772-8108

LAKE OROVILLE Coho: Coho bite is excellent. Best quality fish is from 30 to 45 feet, but they are shallower and deeper, too. Water clarity is good. Water temp is in the high 40s. Huntington’s Sportsmen’s Store (530) 534-8000

LOWER SACRAMENTO RIVER trout:  Caddis hatch started Monday. Trout anglers have experienced much better numbers since then. The Hatch goes off mid-day. Better hatches occur higher upstream near Redding. The Fly Shop (530) 222-3555

SAN FRANCISCO and SAN PABLO BAY striped bass: In the South Bay, striped bass are being caught from Point San Bruno, Kincaid’s and Genentech. Stripers move toward Oyster Point in the evening. Kastmasters, Hairraisers are being employed.  In San Pablo Bay, stripers are being caught trolling at the top of the tide along the Marin Shoreline. Or, use shrimp baits on the anchor near the Pumphouse. Some boats get limits. (650) 589-3474; (415) 456-0321

EEL RIVER steelhead: Conditions continue to be very good for steelhead anglers. The long stretch of water between Holmes and Rio Dell has been very productive for those pulling plugs and bouncing roe.  Grundman’s Sporting Goods (707) 764-5744
