Big changes are in store after the storms clear. Lakes are rising and rivers are spitting debris. Lake Oroville has come up 50 feet since the rain began. Lake Shasta has risen 22 feet. Little Lake Amador received a 10 foot boost. Anglers will be back out this weekend under clear skies and settling conditions. The most reliable are the Trinity River for steelhead, San Pablo Bay and Suisun Bay for sturgeon and the rock bottom lakes in the East Bay. Here are this week’s Best Bites:

DONNER, STAMPEDE mackinaw: This is the time of year shore anglers can get large mackinaw trout. Use large Kastmasters or Countdown Rapalas to attract cruising macks. Boaters can troll near the shoreline or use jigs for mackinaw. Mountain Hardware & Sports (530) 587-4844

QUARRY LAKES trout: The water is clear and trout fishing has been good. A 12-pound trout caught by Jesse Palomares of Fremont was the big fish of the week. Power Bait, nightcrawlers, corn will work. A 10 pounder and two nine pounders also were caught last week. Bite has been moving all around the lake. (510) 544-3133

SHADOW CLIFFS trout: DFG is planting 2,000 pounds of trout this week and EBRPD next week is adding 500 pounds of larger fish. This is fishing well from the shoreline. (510) 544-3230

TRINITY RIVER steelhead: River will be fishable at Junction City by today. It’s clear from Douglas City to Lewiston. Where the steelhead have moved and how many arrived will be found out in the coming days. But conditions are fishable and you can’t say that about any of the coastal streams. (530) 623-4999

SAN PABLO BAY sturgeon: Conditions are prime for sturgeon fishing. Water is chocolate brown, the bay is full of fresh water and crabs have been flushed out. Tides are good from the weekend and through next week. Striper fishing will drop off, but it’s time to get after sturgeon. (415) 456-0321

STURGEON DERBY REMINDER: Pittsburg Marina and Dockside Bait & Tackle will hold a sturgeon and striped bass derby December 14-16. Entry fee is $35 and includes lunch. All proceeds go to prizes. Dockside Bait (925) 252-0151
