Pressure is light. Biggest trout in some time was caught Monday afternoon. A 7-pound rainbow was caught trolling a Cripplure. Don from Ido made the catch. The bite is on the slow side. Best tactic is getting closer to the bottom. (530) 778-3770

McCloud (fresh water river)
Updated 2013-06-12 15:39:53

Fishing has been good in the mornings and late in the day in this hot weather. Lots of golden stones in the afternoons, use a size 10 or 12 stimulator with dropppers before 3 pm, then without after then. If you use a dropper go long and consider two nymphs, one doubles as your weight. Try to get to the other side of the McCloud River and always try to fish or wade from from flat side of the river to bank side of the river. Small dropper rigs for your nymphs like size 16 & 18. Right before dark dry fly with light cahills size 16 or parachute adams. look for foam lines and trout rising. If you’re not picking up fish, go to nymphing with two size 18 nymphs one caddis on top, one mayfly on the bottom and very colors – possible no beads. Look for pocket water or hydrated water edges and go extreme measures.. Turn in poachers to DFG !!! I see many violators on the McCloud below dam.www.jacktrout.com, (530) 926-4540,  (530) 235-2969

off the charts trout fishing in the north state as Pit 3 is fishing the best and least difficult to wade sections 3, 4 or 5. High stick with black copper johns size 12 and pt’s size 14 on the bottom. Also right near dark or on cloudy days the caddis hatch turns on. Use elk hair or ec caddis size 14. Wade with caution. Conditions are improving every day and fishing is really turning on. Bring a wading staff!! Pit #3, 4 or 5 black nymphs and rubber legs, also on dries using elk hair caddis size 14.www.jacktrout.com, (530) 926-4540

The Upper Sacramento River is at prime levels now for wading. Flows are perfect for safe wading and accessing the tail outs for crossing the river to get to the best side of the river. I have seen golden stones daily in the afternoons on warmer days. size 16, Blue wing olives and grey may flies on colder days. Use beaded nymphs size 18 to 14. Size 18 black micro mayfly was best for me this week. Also size 18 red & black copper johns. s&m’s size 18, pt’s flash back size 18. Rains will bring great dry fly fishing mid day to dark. The water tempetature on the surface was 45.6 degrees, and after dropping a "Fish Hawk" probe down to 70 feet of water, the temp did not change a full degree. Most of the fish hit between 60 and 75 feet of water and seemed to be scattered throughout at different depths.   Rick Kennedy (530) 263-0990, (530) 623-4999

Salmon are being caught near Burnt Ranch. A 20 pounder was nailed over Memorial Day Weekend but remember the hike in and out is treacherous and the high, cold water could be lethal if you slip.  The river further upstream is too high for decent fishing. The river is running at 3,040 cfs and dropping slowly but flows won’t be fishable until into July. (530) 623-4999, (530) 623-4352
