Lassen-Plumas
Almanor (fresh water lake) Most boats have been trolling, however there are a few mooching and ripping baits closer to shore. Fast action trolling lures work early in the morning. Trout are everywhere up and down the water column. The trolling bite has been exciting lately. By late morning more fish go down, especially with the bright sunshine, no wind and a warming surface. Antelope Lake (fresh water lake) Trout fishing remains consistently good. Cinnamon leech or olive leech trolling flies is the way to go. (530) 283-2733
Baum Lake (fresh water lake) Fishing is fair to good. Blue wing olives and midges in the morning are producing good numbers with a parachute BWO dry attached to a midge dropper. Best tactic is to anchor a pontoon boat or float tube off the main current drifting a dry/dropper in the main current where trout are rising. Rainy and cloudy days are fishing best with extended hatches of BWO’s. Sunny days produce some callibaetis in the afternoon but the best is still to come. If hatches slow, switch to a streamer on a sink tip line. Fish First (530) 343-8300
Britton (fresh water lake) Britton is slow with little pressure. (530) 335-2381
Buck's Lake (fresh water lake) Bucks Creek inlet is a good spot to toss nymphs for trout to 16 inches. Mackinaw bite is decent for fish to 10 pounds. (530) 283-2733
Bullard's Bar (fresh water lake) Kokanee bite is picking up. They are in the main body of the lake 25 feet below the surface. Flasher/nightcrawlers will work. Bass bite is good. Lake temperatures is in the low 70s. Emerald Cove Resort & Marina (530) 692-3200
Butt Lake (fresh water lake) Sporadic action here because of intermittent running of power house. There are quality fish if you hit it right, with rainbows to four pounds. Use pond smelt imitations. (530) 283-2733
Cassel Lake (fresh water lake) Cassel is on the slow side, no matter the offering. Baum is producing much better. (530) 335-2381
Davis (fresh water lake) Action has been hit-or-miss and depends on the wind. Jenkins, Cow Creek and Eagle Point have been productive spot for fly fishers. Trollers do well at the north end of the island down to Camp 5. Copper Dick Nites or Needlefish work well. (530) 832-0270
Eagle Lake (fresh water lake) Lake opens Saturday to fishing. Best action will be in the south end where there is deeper water and better boat access. www.eaglelakefishing.net
Fall River (fresh water river) No reason this shouldn't be a good trout opener option.
Feather River (fresh water river) Middle Fork is fishing well from Nelson Creek all the way down. October caddis is a good bet. Bead-head nymphs, birds nests, stimulators and tan caddis also will work. There’s very little pressure. (530) 283-2733
Frenchman (fresh water lake) Fishing at Frenchman Lake has been great this past week. Productive stretch is between Spring Creek and Big Cove. Some catch and release fishermen reported catching 9 rainbows in that area - each fish about 16 inches. (530) 993-4683
Gold Lake Basin (fresh water lake) Still not much word. Traffic has been light but that will change this week. (530) 862-1297
Hat Creek (fresh water river) Some stoneflies are being spotted on warmer days. There are good hatches on overcast days or rainy days. look for BWO or green drakes. Also fish pt’s #16, copper Johns in any colors, amber princes, birds nest size 14, green drake nymphs, s&m’s size 18, BK micro mayfly size 18. For dries use light cahill, blue wing olive dries #16, crippled mayfly #16, EC caddis #16. Hat Creek should get better every week now as we head into June when prime time peaks about June 25th. Rimrock Ranch (530) 335-7114; www.jacktrout.com, (530) 926-4540
Pit River (fresh water river) Pit River is now one of the best places to go trout fishing in the north state as Pit 3 is fishing the best and least difficult to wade. High stick with black copper Johns size 12 and pt’s size 14 on the bottom. Caddis hatch turns on at dusk. Use elk hair or ec caddis size 14. Wade with caution but conditions are improving every day and fishing is turning on. Bring a wading staff! www.jacktrout.com, (530) 926-4540
Sacramento River (Redding) (fresh water river) Salmon fly hatches are coming off and there are PMDs, too. Wind is a problem. Flows are high but stable for the past week. River is unwadable. The Fly Shop (530) 222-3555 |
