Antioch (fresh water open) When the bait shop is out of bait, you know the fishing good. Stripers are being caught from the pier and so are sturgeon. There are big sturgeon in the lower San Joaquin. Discovery Bay (fresh water lake) Schoolie sized stripers have invaded the Old River. From Disco south, River2Sea Rovers can draw an abundant topwater bite on most points all the way south to Tracy. Bass pushing the 3 to 5 pound mark are showing on occasion, The keys are fishing higher current and shade. As the sun penetrates the water start punching. Topwater fishing with Pop’Rs is starting to improve greatly with the conditions of the last week, Frogs and wake baits are scoring some nice fish as well. Frank's Tract (fresh water open) Best largemout action is had with Senkos or RoboWorms. Swim baits and crankbaits also will get. Frog bite is just starting. Black bass are plentiful in Franks Tract and Little Franks Tract. Stripers averaging 18 to 20 inches will take swimbaits in Franks Tract. Hook, Line & Sinker (925) 625-2441
Freeport (fresh water open) Striper fishing is decent. A lot of shakers are being caught but an occasional keeper shows up. Channel catfish are starting to bite. Some go to four pounds. Freeport Bait (916) 665-1935
Isleton (fresh water open) The HOT weekend actually slowed the numbers of anglers on the river with this weekend. Still, bank anglers scored this past week along the highway 160 from Three Miles Slough Bridge to Isleton Bridge on cut baits, pile worms. Cut baits and crawlers scored some nice catfish. Things are solid, now if the wind would would ever calm we could have a solid week ahead. Panfish bite is also on the upswing using wax and red worms under bobbers out of the current. Smallies are showing for crankbait anglers from Isleton to Walnut Grove. Striper trollers caught and released about 8 fish to 12 fish per trip. Pittsburg (fresh water open) Few going out. Best luck has come catching small stripers close to shore or with mudsuckers or minnows in Broad Slough. Dockside Bait (925) 252-0151
Rio Vista (fresh water open) Bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass are being caught along River Road. Stripers are in the same area. Mudsuckers, fresh shad or pile worms get bass ranging from 18 to 32 inches. Hap’s Bait (707) 374-2372
San Joaquin Side (fresh water open) San Joaquin Side below Three Mile Slough has had a nice striper bite. Guide Don Paganelli went out this week and had eight bass to 10 pounds before noon/ Liberty Island was good for fish to 5-6 pounds with swimbaits, he reported. Don Paganelli (916) 502-3474
Stockton (fresh water open) Bluegill and black bass are plentiful in Whiskey Slough. Jumbo minnows, crankbaits or Senkos get bass. Buckley Cove also has black bass and bluegill. Stripers are in Old River. Fresh shad get stripers to 20 pounds. A lot are in the 8 to 12 pound class. H&R Bait & Tackle (209) 463-1938
Tracy (fresh water lake) Black bass bite is solid. Wacky-rigged Senkos and crankbaits are the most commonly used tactics. Most of the stripers are shakers. Tracy Oasis Marina (209) 835-3182
Walnut Grove (fresh water open) Stick with the trolling! The trolling bite continues strong. Angry Eye minnows and Yo-Zuris are the top choices here as well. Bank anglers use livers and cut baits for 2 to 4 pound catfish. For fun, try some smallie fishing. Crankbaits and brown blue jigs are getting the smallmouth. Frog bite for largemouth is improving on the hot days in the backwater areas. West Delta (fresh water open) “Spooled again!” exclaimed one angler from the Antioch pier! Sturgeon success has come on the outgoing tide with pile worms, eel and roe. Occasionally the Antioch pier anglers run into Mr .Diamondback but boaters have best shot at Broad Slough, Bouy 1 and Pittsburg PG&E are good bets. While bank and pier anglers are getting decent action, again moving tide is the key for the stripers and catfish. Pile worms, shad and cut offerings are the best bet for them.
