It’s not easy finding quality fishing during the middle of August. In a drought year. With lots of wind throughout the state. But there are some options available, especially with salmon. The fish are lining up outside the Golden Gate and fishing is quite good. Anglers are interecepting some in Benicia – as well as some striped bass - and action on the Sacramento is starting to improve. Those are the highlights. Here are the rest of this week’s Best Bites:

Anglers have questions, frustrations about water policies

As the drought stricken summer continues, trout are heading for the cooler water and deeper holes in streams. Mid-day fishing has been unbearably hot with temperatures rising to 105 degrees even up here on the upper Klamath.  Those who fish at the crack of dawn and the last hour of daylight have better luck.  That is if they are not fishing below the last Dam (Iron Gate) where the “bite” has turned off.

Big browns crossing Trinity Weir - local or anadromous is the question

For the past three weeks, water releases from Iron Gate Dam

have increased from 1,200 cubic feet per second (cfs) to around

1,500 cfs, which slowed the fishing on the upper Klamath River.
